The Shiyazhi pageant is an event where young Navajo girls between 6 and 9 years of age have an opportunity to learn about their heritage and culture. It is designed for Navajo families living in northern Utah urban areas where the children often grow up without the opportunity to learn about their culture. Each participant must dress in a traditional manner, learn to introduce themselves in Navajo, including their clan background, and demonstrate a traditional Navajo skill or talent. It is gratifying to see how much each year's contest winner grows in poise and confidence as she represents the Adopt-A-Native-Elder Program at various events throughout the year.
Star Nez was crowned as our princess at last year's show.
