THE NAVAJO GRANDMA IDOL CONTEST
The Navajo Grandma Idol Contest is loosely based on the popular TV show American Idol. In the rug show version the Elders who wish to participate are given a theme upon which to base a song, but they only have a few minutes to think it over before they get up and sing. The winner is chosen by popular acclaim and receives a nice prize.

The theme for each contest is typically based on some aspect of Navajo culture and life. Here are the crowd favorites from a previous contest: May Shay, Darlene Furcap, and Ruth Benally.
